Training

Animals experience pain and distress as a result of being used in experiments. We have the responsibility to properly recognize and effectively reduce animal suffering, and we can achieve by:
  • identify and assess suffering and pain in lab animals;
  • reduce stress from experimental procedures by training and better techniques;
  • improve experimental design and analytical methods to reduce the number of animals needed;
  • update with worldwide animal experiment guidelines and new techniques to improve animal welfare.
LASEC provides hands-on training for common laboratory animal handling and procedures.

Training Requirements

Please note that approval for new protocols and amendments will only be granted after the completion of the required training.
The training requirements include the following modules from ORKTS, CUHK, and AALAS Learning Library:

  •  Animal Ethics (0.5hr): The Animal Ethics module from ORKTS covers introduction to local regulations, CUHK policies, and ethical considerations.
  • Species Specific Training (1-3hrs): This module from AALAS Learning Library provides practical information on the common procedures of the specific animal species that you will use in your experiments.
  • Survival Surgery Training, if applicable (2hrs): This module from AALAS Learning Library provides information on how to perform surgical procedures on animals in a humane and aseptic manner, as well as how to monitor and care for post-operative animals.

For specific training requirements, please refer to your AEEC application on tick@lab, under Personnel – General AUP training.

Please note that an AALAS Learning Library account will be set up after your registration on the tick@lab system. You may receive a system email from the AALAS Learning Library.

Online Resources

Continuous Training (An account will be created for Tick@lab registrants)
AALAS Learning Library
The AALAS Learning Library provide essential training material for personnel working with laboratory animals.
Please refer to the AALAS Library catalog.
Guide to AALAS
Experiment Planning
PREPARE checklist
The PREPARE guidelines summarize key aspects of consideration in planning animal experiment.

Experimental Design Assistant
This online tool provide guidance for researchers to use minimum number of animals consistent with their scientific objectives.

Animal number

This article discussed animal experiments are usually under power, and can be improved by  using historical data.
Choosing the animal strain
LASEC Animal Strain List
CUHK LASEC breeds over 180 strains of animals. Please consider using available strains for your experiments.

Common Immuno-deficient strains (JAX)
The Jackson Laboratory has summarized characteristics of immuno-deficient mouse strains.

Mouse Genome Informatics (MGI)
MGI is an international database resource for the laboratory mouse, providing integrated genetic, genomic, and biological data to facilitate the study of human health and disease.

International Mouse Strain Resource (IMSR)
The IMSR is a searchable online database of mouse strains, stocks, and mutant ES cell lines available worldwide, including inbred, mutant, and genetically engineered strains.

Refining Procedures
Blood sampling techniques
The NC3Rs provides information of blood sampling for common laboratory species.

How to pick up a mouse
Research has shown that picking up mice by the tail induces anxiety.

Postoperative care
Research showed pain treatment, fluid therapy, warmth and high energy liquid reduce morbidity and mortality after surgery.
